MTV Unveils New Logo [R.I.P. Music Television]

Yesterday, MTV changed its iconic Frank Onlinsky-designed logo of nearly 30 years to reflect its change from the once purveyor of cutting edge music to its current role as distributor of reality garbage (I’m looking at you Speidi and Snooki).

mtv_logosThe new logo is a minor change aesthetically but a major one symbolically. Here is what MTV had to say:

It represents a new visually defined MTV, stimulating its past, present and future and embracing it’s diversity. Everything from Jersey Shore, to the VMAs to collaborations with the MoMA. The logo is part of MTV’s re-invention to connect with today’s millennial generation and bring them in as part of the channel.

I guess its not really a huge surprise since the network hasn’t really had any music-driven programming since Carson Daly last introduced a Linkin Park/Britney Spears video on TRL in the late nineties. The network is planning on using the space in the “M” to fill it with its “stars” (and I mean that in the loosest term possible).

I would rather see them remove all signs of the classic logo since the channel is so far removed from what it was in the beginning. It has so little to do with music & videos anymore; keeping any similarities to its past in the logo is just a blatant misrepresentation.

I agree with you there Gary.

I’m actually surprised that a once progressive company took this long to make that change. Also, their new “millenials” demo that they are now catering to never knew the “old” MTV so there is essentially nothing to miss.

I’m kinda late on this one but, I do agree with Gary. I will say though, the multimedia usage of the new logo is awesome.
